As folhas e ramos têm propriedade antibióticas.
History and applications:
Its genus Lagerstroemia was set in honour of the Swedish naturalist Magnus von Lagerström (1696-1759), a friend of Linnaeus. The species name refers to one of its habitats of origin: the islands of the Indo-Malay archipelago. In English it is known as Crape Myrtle for its leaves resemble those of the myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) and the petals resemble pieces of crape (textile). Its wood is used in the tropics – as it is resistant to insects – for carpentry and construction. Bark infusions of the species are antifebrile and tonic. Both leaves and branches have antibiotic effects. The leaves, branches and flowers are used as abstergents. Its root is astringent (for tighten tissues, capillary strengthening, on wounds and for decreasing mucus secretion) and, in India, its infusion is used for gargling. Its seeds have narcotic effects.
