History and applications:
The genus name Oleander – from the Italian word oleander, like Olea (olive) – was set due to the similarity of both species leaves. The oleander is a shrub, which is very resistant to all sorts of soils and adverse conditions. The entire plant is toxic and, if it is ingested in large quantities, it may cause the death of animals or even humans. It was once considered effective against the bite of poisonous animals. Its active ingredient is the Oleandrin, a cardiac glycoside that is responsible for its toxicity. However, its flowers are fragrant and so they used by perfumeries.
